The initial one is located at Cascade Park, with work happening now to install one on Broad Street, too.
The units are free-standing, steel bathrooms, constructed on a cement pad.
They are open at the bottom, so folks can easily see if they are occupied.
While the units come with built-in toilet paper and hand sanitizer dispensers, they are not equipped with power for lighting, so if you have to go after dark, you'll have to provide your own light.
Instead of the traditional port-a-potty set up with a structure that sits on a hole that needs to be flushed out regularly...
...these units have a holding tank that will be emptied periodically.
Each public bathroom costs about $17,500 to construct. The project was approved for a total of $250,000. Aside from the construction costs, the Bangor City Council also allocated money to incorporate a beautification/art campaign into the construction of all of the units and money for maintenance and upkeep.
Along with the new facility at Cascade Park, the City Council approved units on Broad Street, Abbot Square, Coe Park, and by the dog park up on Essex Street.

The units take about 2 weeks to construct. City officials hope to have all of the new public bathrooms in place by the end of the summer.
