Flick Chick here once again in the pursuit of truth, justice and keeping you from spending your hard earned money on movies that don’t make the grade! Over the weekend put on spacesuit and grabbed my quantum physics book and went to the Bangor Mall Cinemas to see ‘Interstellar’.

This movie runs about and 2 hours and 45 minutes, (3:15 if you count the trailers) is an adventure, sci-fi and is rated PG-13 for some intense perilous action and brief strong language. The film has an incredible cast, starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow, Casey Afleck, Matt Damon, Michael Cain just to name a few.

Summary:

The earth is dying slowly and its population along with it, when a former NASA pilot and engineer named Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is stumbles upon a facility with plans to save earth’s people by finding a new home in a different galaxy. This sends Cooper and a team of explorers traveling through a wormhole in an attempt to find a potentially habitable planet that will sustain humanity.

Review:

I had mixed feeling walking into this movie. On one hand, I love sci-fi and despite my limited brain I love quantum physics on the other hand I think any movie over 2 hours generally needs to go back to editing.  In essence the story is simple, the earth is destroyed and what can we do to save people. The human element of Cooper and his family plus things you can’t imagine made this movie complex and so engaging. I have seen hundreds upon hundreds of movies and I had thought the ability to surprise me was long gone.  I sat through this with no idea how they would bring it to conclusion and the fear that it would be awful. Instead it was amazing and satisfying. I am giving credit to ‘space’ as a character in itself, quiet, a void and formidable and I think the director wanted to develop it fully hence the extra length. The cast was as amazing as you would think and although my head might give it an 8 my butt tells me it was a 10. So on a scale of 1-10, I’ll cut the difference and give ‘Interstellar’ a 9. 9 because even though they made 3 hours work, I still think they could have done it in less.
