Flick Chick here once again in the pursuit of truth, justice and keeping you from spending your hard earned money on movies that don’t make the grade! Over the weekend grabbed my running shoes and headed to the Bangor Mall Cinemas to see ‘McFarland, USA’.

This movie runs just about 2 hours and is a sports drama. The film is rated PG for thematic material, some violence and language. The film stars Kevin Costner, Ramiro Rodriguez, Carlos Pratts, Johnny Ortiz, Rafael Martinez

Summary:

This is the true story of teacher and coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) who because of a few anger issues and bad choices gets fired from his school in Idaho and is forced to take a job in McFarland CA. McFarland is an agricultural community with a primarily Mexican-American population. Most of the students in his new High School pick fruit and vegetables before and after school to help support their families and do not have many prospects outside of that life. Then providence steps in and California adds a state competition category to its curriculum. White sees their potential as runners and forms a cross country running team to show them natural advantages that lack of money and status cannot take from them.

Review:

This is a very good and inspiring story showing how having someone outside of your family believe in you can change your future. It is a slow paced film with heart but without a lot of sizzle or drama. So on a scale of 1-10, I’m giving ‘McFarland, USA’ a 7.
