Shannon Moss, Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson, says they now have the cause of death and have identified those who were killed.

"The Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Augusta conducted the autopsy on the deceased child on Thursday, August 29, 2024, and the adult male on Friday morning,  August 30, 2024.  The OCME has identified the deceased adult male as 37-year-old Trent Weston of Troy, New Hampshire. The OCME ruled the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death as homicide as a result of an officer-involved shooting. The OCME has identified Trent Weston’s deceased child as 8-year-old Benson Weston of Troy, New Hampshire, and ruled the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death as homicide."

The Chief Medical Officer in New Hampshire performed the autopsy on Weston's wife, 37-year-old Brittany Weston, and determined that she died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, just as her son did. They have also ruled the woman's death a homicide.

Authorities in both states are still looking into the details of what led up to the argument Weston reported having with his wife in New Hampshire in the early hours of Thursday, August 29th, and how he ended up in a standoff with police, in a vehicle on the Piscataqua River Bridge in Maine, with the dead body of his son in the back seat.

Officers from Maine and New Hampshire ultimately opened fire on Weston and killed him when he got out of his vehicle during the standoff and raised a gun at them.

Those officers have been put on administrative leave as the Maine Attorney General's Office investigates the use of deadly force, as is standard procedure in situations like this.
