While we certainly enjoy a drink or two up here in Maine, where in our state are folks really 'enjoying' them the most?

While the word ‘drunkest’ might sound like a jab, that’s not the intention here—we’re just laying out the facts. And hey, don’t shoot the messenger… There’s probably a saying about that somewhere, right?

So, with that in mind, how do we even determine or define the ‘drunkest’ cities in Maine? And what does it actually mean to be labeled the ‘drunkest’ city? How is that title earned?

We looked at a few different sources to confirm the results, including 24/7 Wall St. and RoadSnacks, which each used different methods to determine the ‘drunkest’ places. 24/7 Wall St. focused on adult binge and heavy drinking rates in metro areas, while RoadSnacks based their list on factors like the number of bars and liquor stores, divorce rates, and how often people talk about drinking on social media.

Alright, now that we’ve got that out of the way— which city in our Pine Tree State was recently named the drunkest in Vacationland?

After looking at a few different sites and reports to cross-reference and confirm the results, both RoadSnacks, with their list ‘The 10 Drunkest Cities in Maine for 2024,’ and 24/7 Wall St., in their report ‘The Drunkest City in Every State,’ came to the same conclusion: Portland takes the top spot.

According to both 24/7 Wall St. and RoadSnacks, Portland ranks as the drunkest metro area in Maine.

With over 20% of adults reporting excessive drinking and a nightlife scene packed with breweries, bars, and liquor stores, it's no surprise that Portland ranks high. While the low divorce rate might raise eyebrows, RoadSnacks notes it’s likely due to the city’s younger population.
