Popular Bangor Sandwich Shop Will NOT Close After All
A last-minute change of events (and ownership) means that one of Bangor's most popular sandwich shops will remain open, instead of closing this month, as originally planned.

Voted "BANGORS BEST DELI/SANDWICH SHOP" 14 Years in a row, Diane Bernosky has most recently owned the Legacy Sandwich Shop. She mentioned in a social media post at the beginning of September, that she would have to close the popular Bangor sandwich shop because:
"I have given it everything I have and more and I must admit Covid sunk me.
Between Closing, losing clientele, having to build that clientele back, not to mention staffing, and the increase in doing business, I give. I would give anything not to have to do this."
The Legacy Sandwich Shop opened when long-time Bangor sandwich staple, The Coffee Pot, closed its doors in 2010, after 80+ years of business in the City. Cranking out the beloved Italians, Legacy built its own fanbase and is regarded by sandwich lovers across Bangor as the closest thing to a Coffee Pot sandwich. When regulars of the shop, Robert Kearns and Christy Spencer learned that Diane planned to close the place, they stepped up to the plate.
"We just couldn’t stand to see another AMAZING Historical Business in Bangor shut their doors. We are long time Customers as well. It really is a place where the owner knows the Customers that come in regularly and a friendship is already in place. So we went in and a conversation started."
So Kearns and Spencer negotiated to take over for Diane, a move she says on their Facebook Page, is nothing short of miraculous!
"Our prayers have been answered! This week is my last week BUT…Christy & Robert have stepped forward to lease the name of Legacy & the space. No closing in between. The menu etc will stay the same. I will train them & be here 3 days a week for a while to ensure you get the product you’re used to getting. I am so excited for my customers & for Christy & Bob. It's up to you now. All the costs of running a business will not drop, so in order for them to succeed you need to continue to come in, tell all the people you know so they will come in."
Kearns says the Legacy location at 163 State Street in Bangor will stay open, and that nothing much will change, aside from the implementation of some longer hours and some tasty additions to what they sell.
"The Name will remain the same. (The Legacy Sandwich) Anything changed will be in ADDITION to what is already an Amazing Variety of Sandwiches created on BRICK OVEN BAKERY Bread that is made fresh daily right here in Bangor...The New Ownership looks forward to meeting everyone who has Supported LEGACY SANDWICH over the years. We INVITE All who have never been, to please come by and give us a try. Legacy will also be offering some HOT SANDWICHES and Paninis. We will have our own line of FREEZE-DRIED Candy made in-house very SOON too !"
Kearns says they will also offer catering and have delivery options through UberEats, DOORDASH and Grubhub.
As of the first of October, their next extended hours of 9 AM - 5 PM will kick in (that's Monday through Saturday.)
Kearns says they're honored that Diane is staying on to help train them.
"The shop's called LEGACY but she is a LEGEND. The LEGACY SANDWICH has been Voted BANGORS BEST DELI/SANDWICH SHOP 14 Years in a row. We INVITE you all to come on in and see why 'It's not just a Sandwich…ITS A LEGACY.' "
