Police in Massachusetts have arrested a Maine man in connection with the death of a woman on Larkin Street in Bangor earlier this week.

Richard Keith Thorpe, 42, of Bangor, was taken into custody Friday morning, according to police.  Authorities believe Thorpe is responsible for the murder of 39-year-old Virginia Cookson, also of Bangor.

"As a result of an investigation by the Bangor Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division in conjunction with the State of Maine Office of the Attorney General, an arrest warrant has been issued for Richard Keith Thorpe DOB: 10/4/81, of Bangor, Maine for the crime of Murder."

Law enforcement officers in Massachusetts apprehended Thorpe early Friday morning.

Sgt. Jason McAmbley, Public Information Officer with the Bangor Police Department released a statement Friday afternoon that Thorpe did try to run from law while in Mass. too.

"Early Friday morning, Richard Thorpe was arrested on a Maine Fugitive From Justice warrant in Pittsfield, Massachusetts by the Pittsfield MA Police Department after a brief police chase, during which nearby schools were locked down. The lockdown lasted less than ten minutes. Neither Cookson nor Thorpe has any known connection to the Pittsfield, Massachusetts area."

A co-worker of Cookson's reported that she was missing when she did not show up for work early in the week. Bangor Police Officers found her body at a home on Larkin Street around 9 AM Wednesday.

An autopsy conducted by the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta determined that Cookson died as a result of a homicide.
