According to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, it can get tricky for first responders when there's a storm, and visibility is already lowered. It puts them at risk and can cause them to be delayed when vehicles are in their way. That's why it's important to slow down and move over when you see any vehicle with flashing lights approaching the area.

To ensure the safety of those traveling on the state's highways, Maine recently enacted a "Move Over" law with a similar purpose; to encourage motorists to slow down and give first responders space to do their jobs. Only this law applies to drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights, not the other way around.

Whichever way you look at it, the more distance you can put between you and those professionals whose job it is to handle emergencies so that they can do their job and help those in need, the better.
