Things were tense for a while in Brewer Monday as police attempted to convince a man with a violent history to surrender after he locked himself into a residence at Riverview Terrace.

According to the Brewer Police Department's Facebook Page, the police were first made aware that 22-year-old Richard Bock had allegedly held a woman against her will, assaulting her multiple times, at some points with a firearm. The victim had been able to escape and report her abuse before being taken to a nearby hospital and treated for serious injuries she sustained during the ordeal.

As Brewer Police Officer Mikayla Rose began to dig into the matter, she learned, and later confirmed, that Bock was at home in the area of Riverview Terrace.

Authorities were familiar with Bock's violent past, and believed, based on their investigation, that he had a firearm in his possession, so they obtained the necessary warrants and proceeded with caution to where they knew him to be hiding out.

At first, things didn't go as they had hoped they would.

"With the assistance of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office and Bangor Police Department tactical units, the residence was surrounded and attempts at communication with the suspect were made. The suspect would not communicate initially and a door to the residence was breached. Eventually, communication was established and the suspect exited the residence and was arrested."

Ultimately Bock was taken into custody and transported to the local jail where he was charged with multiple counts of assault, creating a police standoff, and violating release conditions.
